Men's Hoops Hosts Dave Lipp Classic

EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell men's basketball team welcomes three teams into the Morse Center this weekend for the Dave Lipp Classic, beginning on Friday afternoon.
 
Corban University and Simpson University do battle in the opening game at 4:00 pm, followed by the Beacons taking on Hope International at 6:00 pm. On Saturday, Corban faces Hope International at 12:30 pm before the Beacons take on Simpson at 3:00 pm.
 
All games will be streamed live through the Bushnell Athletics You Tube page.
 
DAVE LIPP CLASSIC
 
Dave LippDave Lipp is a six-time inductee into the Bushnell Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted as an individual in 2013. During his 23 seasons as the head coach of the men's basketball program, Lipp led NCU to thirteen national championship tournament appearances, winning five national titles.
 
His teams won three straight National Bible College Athletic Association (NBCAA) championships from 1983-1985 and back-to-back National Small College Athletics Association (NSCAA) championships in 1998 and 1999. Coach Lipp is NCU's all-time wins leader with 438 victories, holding a .639 career winning percentage. He produced ten 20-win seasons.
 
Lipp also served as Athletic Director for 20 years, during which time he spearheaded numerous fundraising campaigns. He began a booster club and implemented a number of capital campaigns, working alongside Hall of Famer and President Emeritus Jim Womack on the construction of the Morse Event Center. Lipp also served as the director for the NCC Athletic Auction and Golf Tournament for 14 years.   
 
BUSHNELL UNIVERSITY
 
The Beacons come into the tournament with a 3-1 overall record and are riding a three-game winning streak with victories over Frontier Conference powerhouses Providence and MSU-Northern, along with a record shattering victory over Portland Bible. Bushnell won that game, 124-42, setting a new school-record for both margin of victory (82 points) and steals (22).
 
Bushnell is led by junior Cory Johnson, averaging 15.8 points per game, while redshirt junior Ashton Harvey is averaging 13 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Harvey has already earned his flowers twice this season, being recognized as both a CCC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.
 
This weekend the Beacons will face Hope International for the first time since 2012, when Head Coach Corey Anderson led the Beacons to a 65-63 victory in Eugene. That is the only match between the schools, dating back to 2003.
 
The Beacons have a long history with Simpson University and since accurate record-keeping began in 2005, Bushnell holds a 17-2 lead in the series. The Beacons have won ten straight, dating back to 2010.
 
CORBAN UNIVERSITY
 
The Warriors have started the season with a 1-2 record, with both losses coming by way of 83-73 scores against a pair of NAIA Top-Ten ranked teams (No. 10 The Masters, No. 6 Arizona Christian).
 
Corban is led by junior guard Spivey Word, averaging 17.3 points per game while former Beacon Drayton Caoile is scoring 13.3 points per game.
 
Corban is 5-5 all-time against Simpson and will face off against the Redhawks for the first time since 2018. They will face Hope International for the first time since 2008 and are 1-0 against the Royals, winning that matchup 16 years ago, 66-63.
 
SIMPSON UNIVERSITY
 
The Redhawks are 2-4 thus far in the 2024-2025 season, including a pair of losses to Cascade Collegiate Conference opponents in Multnomah (91-77) and Southern Oregon (81-72).
 
Simpson is led by Drey Ubas, averaging 14 points per game. He is shooting 54% from three-point range and has hit 19 threes in just six games.
 
HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
 
The Royals come into the weekend with a 5-1 record and are riding a three-game winning streak. They are outscoring opponents by an average of 14 points per game and their lone loss was to NCAA Division II power Concordia-Irvine. HIU is currently receiving votes in the NAIA National Coaches Poll. 
 
Nick Hopkins leads the team in scoring, averaging 19 points per game. He is shooting 62% from the field and leads the team with six steals.
