Beacons Take No. 4 Mounties to the Limit

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Winning multiple sets in Quinn Colosseum for just the second time in school history, the Bushnell volleyball team pushed No. 4 Eastern Oregon to their limit on Saturday before succumbing to a reverse sweep, losing in five sets, 23-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-13, 15-9.

The Beacons (16-8, 11-5 CCC) closed out an impressive weekend, in which they defeated No. 22 College of Idaho for the second time on Friday.

Head Coach Jason Corwin said, "This program continues to grow. We are pretty upset about this missed opportunity, which is just a sign of where we now are as a program. This will make us stronger. As a coach, I am very proud of this team. I will go to battle with this team every day of the week and twice on Sunday. We have something special brewing here and there is still room for growth and improvement as we navigate to finish the conference season and beyond."

Bushnell stunned the Mounties, who had just easily swept No. 9 Corban on Friday, taking the first two sets as they held EOU to .050 hitting. Eastern, however, didn't want to send their senior-night crowd home disappointed and rallied to win three straight sets, and maintaining their share of first-place in the CCC.

Eastern Oregon (21-2, 13-2 CCC) did most of their damage at the net as they combined for an insurmountable 20 blocks, which also holding a 61-47 margin in kills and 88-73 advantage in digs. Keira Vaughn led all players with 14 kills while McKenzie Jonas had herself a night, posting 11 blocks. Alexis McMurtrey posted a match-high 30 assists and Hailey Arritola earned match-highs with 26 digs and three aces.

The Beacons had 13 kills apiece from Hailey Heider and Amayah Semau. Both women earned double-doubles, posting 18 and 12 digs respectively.  Bella Parque led the team with 21 digs while Makenna Mosher finished with five blocks.

With six games remaining in the CCC schedule, Bushnell now sits alone in fourth-place in the CCC, two games behind Corban and one-and-a-half ahead of College of Idaho.

The Beacons head home next weekend, and will play their third straight Top-25 opponent on Friday night, taking on No. 5 Southern Oregon University at 6:00 pm.
