Beacons Bounce Back to Take Series Over Corban

SPRINGFIELD, Ore.  –  Bushnell University picked up a Cascade Collegiate Conference series win over Corban University, splitting the postponed doubleheader on Monday at the Hamlin Sports Complex.

Although the Beacons (19-10, 7-1 CCC) were playing at home, they were the visitors on the scoreboard today as Corban (8-22, 2-6) was the series host. The third and fourth games were moved to Springfield due to the weather-caused field conditions.

Head Coach Tommy Richards said, "The best part of today was our ability to leave the first game in the past. We bounced back and got back to doing thing the right way in game two. For some that means believing in themselves and for others it's a heightened sense of urgency. We have another test tomorrow."

Game 1: Corban 5, Bushnell 1

The Beacons outhit the Warriors in Monday's first game, 7-6, but were unable to put runs across the plate, leaving nine runners on base throughout the contest. The Corban offense was highlighted by a two-run homer from Brian Landon to make it a 5-0 lead for the Warriors in the bottom of the fifth.

Bryce Bridge (2-0) tossed 6.1 innings for Corban, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts. Trevor Szczepanek gave up just one hit through the final 2.2 innings to seal the 5-1 victory for the Warriors.

Elijah Maris went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.

Ethan Paulson (1-2) got the start for Bushnell, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in four innings of work. Trevor Hammond pitched the next four, allowing two runs on three hits.

Ethan Stacy and Jacob Richardson recorded two hits apiece to lead the Beacons at the plate. Stacy drove in Bushnell's run with a double in the sixth inning.

Game 2: Bushnell 11, Corban 2

The Beacons led by as many as 10 runs in the series finale. Jeff Fripp drove in four runs, finishing 4-for-5 at the plate. He opened his night with a solo shot to left in the fourth before bringing home three more in the eighth with a bases-clearing double to right center.

Fripp and Cade Crist, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, accounted for seven of Bushnell's 12 hits.

Crist hit his seventh home run of the year to get the Beacons on the scoreboard, a two-run shot to left in the top of the third. Fripp added on with his first homer of the season in the fourth and Bushnell added two more in the sixth, both on wild pitches.

Fripp's three-run double in the eighth made it a 10-0 lead for the Beacons but the Warriors answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half to extend the game. CJ Smith hit an RBI-triple down the left field line in the ninth to finish off the scoring for Bushnell.

Adam Sabatino (3-1) posted another strong five-inning outing, allowing no runs on five hits. Trenton Hough threw the next three frames, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits before Jack Horn entered in the ninth. Horn struck out two batters to seal the 11-2 win for the Beacons.

Corban used six pitchers in the finale with Hayden Van Acker (1-3) getting the start. The Warriors recorded nine hits and were led by Josh Miyazawa's 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

Up Next: Bushnell hosts Linfield University tomorrow in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
