Beacons Swept Despite Strong Outing for Hillier

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Bushnell softball team opened up their final home weekend of the season on Friday as they fell in a double-header to No. 8 College of Idaho, 2-0 and 9-0.

GAME ONE: College of Idaho 2, Bushnell 0

One pitch proved to be the difference in what was one of the strongest outings of the season for the Beacons, despite the loss. Bushnell out-hit the Yotes 7-5 in the game, with the only runs of the contest coming on a two-run homer for Madelyn Powell in the fourth inning.

Outside of the home run ball to Powell, Bushnell starter Liz Hillier (2-7) threw a gem, striking out five batters in the complete game effort. Katelyn Wilfert (15-3), however, was able to keep Bushnell at bay as the home team stranded eight runners on base and scattered seven singles.

Krystal Akagi led the way for the Beacon offense with two hits.

GAME TWO: College of Idaho 9, Bushnell 0 (Six Innings)

The Yotes took advantage of a wet field and slopping defensive performance in the night cap, scoring the run-rule victory despite collecting just four hits in the game on Bushnell starter Leslie Reynaga (4-8). Reynaga gave up nine walks in the game, but had just two earned runs as Bushnell tallied five errors in the ballgame.

The Beacons had just three hits as they were shutout for the second time, including doubles for Akagi and Madison Steelman.

Hannah McNerney (19-2) threw a solid complete-game effort for the Yotes, striking out six for the victory.

NEXT:

The Beacons (11-31, 7-19 CCC) remain alive in the hunt for the Cascade Conference post-season, and will look to continue that trek tomorrow as they face off against C of I (39-6, 23-5) two more times, including the CCC-counting third game of the series.
