SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Senior third-basewoman
Bryana Yoshida hit a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning of game one as the Bushnell softball team opened the weekend with a split against The University of British Columbia.
Â
GAME ONE: Bushnell 4, British Columbia 3 (8 Innings)
Â
Bushnell rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the morning session, scoring since runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning to pull out the victory as they out-hit the T-Birds, 10-7.
Â
The bottom of the sixth saw pinch-running
Sam Silver score on an RBI single from
Faith Wayman, making it a 3-2 contest. The first heroics came in the bottom of the seventh when, down to her final strike,
Suzi Krstic hit a double down the right field line to score Erika Allen as the Beacons pulled even. It was heads up running that led to the run as Allen had moved to second after tagging up on a bunted foul out.
Â
Strong defense also played a role for the Beacons as they had two huge line-drive double-plays in the top of the seventh and eighth innings, catching runners who had drifted two far off their bases.
Â
Then with one out in the bottom of the eighth,
Faith Wayman singled up the middle and
Michelle Sierra followed with a bunt single, making way for Yoshida to hit the walk-off double.
Â
Leslie Reynaga (2-2) went the distance to pick up the win for the Beacons, allowing three runs over eight innings while striking out three batters.
Â
Allen led the offense, batting 3-for-4 while Wayman batted 2-for-3 with two runs including the game-winner.
Â
Shae Sever (1-2) also threw a complete game for UBC, giving up three earned and striking out eight batters in 7.1 innings. Kaitlyn Eng had a two-hit game in the loss including an RBI double.
Â
GAME TWO: British Columbia 7, Bushnell 2
Â
The Thunderbirds scattered seven hits and scored in four different innings as they rallied to force the double-header split. Lindsay Bell (2-1) struck out seven batters in a complete-game effort giving up five hits to the Beacons.
Â
Bushnell was able to avoid the shutout in the bottom of the seventh, with Allen scored on an error and
Madison Steelman came home on a sacrifice fly from
Hannah Tennant.
Â
Sam Silver (1-5) took the loss for the Beacons, giving up for earned runs on six hits over six innings of work.
