EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon Tech pitchers combined to strike out 20 Bushnell batters while allowing just three hits in a Cascade Collegiate Conference double-header sweep on Friday morning. The Beacons were able to avoid any run-rule defeats at the hands of the No. 1 ranked team in the NAIA, and
Hannah Tennant gave the home team a bit of a silver lining as she broke Bushnell's single-season record for sacrifice flies.
GAME ONE: Oregon Tech 5, Bushnell 0
Bushnell starter
Sam Silver (3-8) held her own against the Owls in the opener, giving up just three earned runs on seven hits while striking out a pair.
Oregon Tech was held off the scoreboard until posting a pair in the third inning. They would add two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Kacie Schmidt (14-1) went the distance for OIT, striking out 12 batters. She allowed just two hits, singles by
Faith Wayman and
Bryana Yoshida.
GAME TWO: Oregon Tech 6, Bushnell 2
The Owls got off to a faster start in game two, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by starting pitcher Makenzie Staub.
The Beacons avoided another shutout as they scored twice in the bottom of the first. Erika Allen scored on a double steal that also saw
Madison Steelman move to third base. The next batter was Tennant who brought home Steelman with her fifth sacrifice fly of the season. Not only did the junior transfer break the single-season record she shared with
Faith Wayman but she also tied the Bushnell career record (5), held by Brooke Davis (2009-2012).
After the rough start, Bushnell freshman pitcher
Liz Hillier (2-4) settled down, allowing just one run on four hits over the final six innings.
After scoring both of their runs without a hit in the first inning, Bushnell was still looking for their first hit in the sixth inning. Steelman insured that the Beacons would not suffer a no-hitter with a bunt single.
Staub (13-3) ended the game with just the one hit, striking out eight batters in seven innings of work. Zoe Allen led the offense as she went 3-for-4 while Kaila Mick and Maggie Buckholz scored two hits apiece.
