Bushnell Defeats Corban on the Road

SALEM, Ore. – The Bushnell University women's basketball team took over fourth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings on Tuesday evening with a 66-56 victory over host Corban University in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

Bushnell (13-6, 10-4 CCC) improves its win streak over Corban (10-10, 7-7) to nine games. Aly Mirabile, who scored 11 points in the first quarter, gave the Beacons a 13-4 lead after her third straight three-pointer in the period, helping Bushnell lead by as many as 17 points in the first half. The Warriors got within seven late in the fourth quarter but were unable to close the gap.

Head Coach Chad Meadors said, "Road wins are hard to come by and against your rival, even harder. Even though I felt like we had them on the ropes a couple times, those kids battled hard out of Corban. They broke our press, which is something they hadn't done in the last few years and rebounded the ball really well. Credit to them, but we found a way to knock down a few shots."

Four Beacons reached double figures, including a double-double from Libby Mathis, who recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kaylen Kamelamela, Bella Pedrojetti and Mirabile recorded 13 points apiece. Mirabile went 3-for-4 from three-point range, while Kamelamela shot 5-of-8 from the field.

Kamelamela, who posted her season-high in scoring tonight, said "We always have more energy when we play our rivals, and we had that tonight. It gave us that extra push and motivation."

"I feel great, I feel like I'm the same player that I was when I left," added Kamelamela, who sat out last season due to injury. "I feel better than ever and ready to play any game that I walk into. It will be fun to show that I'm still the same player that I was."

Bushnell shot 35.7% from the floor as a team, including 9-of-23 from three and scored 23 points off of 23 Warrior turnovers. Five Beacons recorded at least three steals.

Holly Golenor led Corban in scoring, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Kirsten Koehnke posted a double-double, recording 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Izzy Boring added 11 points, shooting 3-for-3 beyond the arc.

The Warriors shot 34.6% from the floor, making 8-of-20 from three and went 12-of-20 at the free throw line.

"I think our chemistry has gotten a lot better and that comes with time," said Kamelamela. "We still have a lot more to go and we aren't near our peak of how good we can play but as the season goes on, we are getter closer. We are a good team and I'm excited to see how far we go."

Up next, Bushnell hosts Northwest University (Jan. 27) and The Evergreen State College (Jan. 28) in the Morse Center.
