Beacons Fight to End But Fall Late to Knights

PORTLAND, Ore.  – The Warner Pacific University men's soccer team remained undefeated with a 3-0 victory over Bushnell on Friday, but the Beacons gave them all they could handle in a fierce Cascade Collegiate Conference battle.

A scoreless duel for the first 81 minutes, the Knights (0-0, 5-0 CCC) were finally able to take control late, after gaining an 11-on-10 advantage with Bushnell having a key defensive player sent off with his second yellow card.

Just 20 seconds after the penalty, WPU posted the game-winner and less than five minutes later they scored another two insurance goals to escape with the win.

The Beacons (3-6-1, 1-3 CCC) had played one of their best matches of the season up to that point, going to-to-toe defensively with a team that had outscored opponents 37-3 on the season coming in. Bushnell keeper Diego Montes Carrera (pictured) collected four saves in the first half, including stopping a penalty kick effort, and the Beacons did not allow a shot-on-goal for the first 35 minutes of the second half.

In the end, the Knights out-shot the Beacons 16-4 and Montes Carrera collected six saves as Warner Pacific produced five shot attempts in the final eight minutes.

Head Coach Joao Ehlers said, "This guys fought hard tonight against a great opponent. We played with a lot of energy and intensity during the 90 minutes and we are expecting to keep that same mentality for tomorrow.

The Beacons travel to face Multnomah (4-4-1, 1-3) at 2:00 pm on Saturday. Warner Pacific, meanwhile, will host Corban University (10-0, 5-0) in a battle of undefeated schools with first-place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference on the line.
