Caleb Premo made his home collegiate debut on Thursday, and made it a good one, scoring a goal before assisting on the game-winner as Bushnell edged George Fox University, 2-1.
Bushnell out-shot the Bruins 12-4 in the contest, including a strong 8-0 advantage in the second half.
An inauspicious start for the Beacons saw GFU score the first goal of the contest just 98 seconds after the opening whistle. The home team, however was able to quickly regroup and tied the game in the 18th minute.
Alejandro Munoz sent a long service pass straight up from the midfield line, drawing the Bruin keeper out the edge of the box. Premo met him there, timing his approach perfectly as he tapped the ball just out of the reach of the keeper and followed it untouched until it crossed the mouth of the goal for the equalizer.
The teams took a 1-1 tie into the intermission and while the Beacons were able to control possession for much of the second half, the game-winner didn't come until the 66th minute.
Caleb Burke created a turnover off an errant Bruin pass and had a give-and-go with Premo. Surrounded by defenders, the last pass went back to Burke who fired in hard, swift ground ball from the top of the box to give the Beacons a lead the would not relinquish.
Head Coach
Joao Ehlers said, "We are very proud of the effort the guys put forth tonight. It is never easy to come back into a game after conceding an early goal, but the guys kept a great mentality. We were able to win most of the individual challenges across the field which was crucial for the outcome of tonight's match."
Bushnell will nine-day layoff before their next game, as the close out the non-conference portion of the schedule on the road, taking on Pacific University on September 10 at 3:00 pm.
