Kuykendall Hits Walk-Off Single as Beacons Split with Saints

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Jordan Kuykendall hit a two-run walk-off single as Bushnell won the non-conference game 9-8 over visiting Carroll College (Mont.) on Saturday at Rich Schwab Field.

The Saints (9-21, 6-12 CCC) won the opener 8-5 to earn the win in the Cascade Collegiate Conference series.

Kuykendall went 6-for-8 at the plate on the day to lead the Beacons (8-22, 5-11).

Game One: Carroll 8, Bushnell 5

The opener featured at least one run scored in all but one inning. The Saints finished with 14 hits, while the Beacons recorded 13.

Carroll got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the first inning, extending the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth. Krystal Akagi, who finished a home run away from the cycle with her 3-for-4 line, drove in a run in each of the second and fourth innings to make it a 3-2 game.

The Saints used a four-run top of the fifth to grab a 7-2 advantage.

The Beacons got back within two runs after an RBI-double from Madison Steelman in the sixth brought the score to 7-5. Trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Bushnell loaded the bases but was unable to get a run across.

Abby Hanley (8-11) pitched a complete game for Carroll, allowing five runs.

Sam Silver (4-8) and Aliyah Kelly split time in the circle for the Beacons. Silver allowed seven runs on 10 hits in four innings of work, while Kelly gave up one run on four hits through the remaining three innings.

Game Two: Bushnell 9, Carroll 8

Carroll struck first with two runs once again in the first inning, but Bushnell answered with six runs in the bottom of the second. Kelly, Akagi, Anabel Mendez and Faith Wayman drove in the runs for the Beacons in the frame. Wayman had two hits in the inning.

The Saints tied it up at 6-6 in the top of the sixth thanks to a three-run double by Anna Davidson.

A Mendez home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth gave the Beacons a 7-6 lead before the Saints added two in the following frame to take a 7-8 lead of their own.

The Beacons continued to rally in the seventh as the game came down to the final out. Akagi and Steelman made their way into scoring position on a passed ball before Anabel Mendez used an infield hit to lead the bases. Kuykendall hit a walk-off single down the left field line to bring in both runners and take home the 9-8 victory.

Josie Barker (0-8) took the loss in the circle for the Saints, allowing nine runs on 17 hits.

Kelly (3-10) pitched a complete game for the Beacons, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits.

Bushnell hits the road next weekend for a series with the College of Idaho on Friday and Saturday.
