SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Bushnell University opened the weekend with a split in Friday's Cascade Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader with Carroll College (Mont.), falling 2-1 in the opener before bouncing back with a 5-1 win in the second game.
Bushnell (7-21, 5-10 CCC) allowed just three runs on the day behind the arms of
Aliyah Kelly and
Sam Silver. Abby Hanley pitched both games for Carroll (8-20, 5-12), giving up just two hits in the opener.
Game One: Carroll 2, Bushnell 1
Hanley (7-10) did not allow a hit until the fifth inning in game one, giving up a leadoff single to
Bryana Yoshida. The Saints recorded 11 hits in the opener but scored just two runs in the win.
Carroll used an RBI-single in both the fourth and fifth inning to grab a 2-0 advantage. Â
Faith Wayman drove in a run for the Beacons in the bottom of the sixth with a single to right center to make a 2-1 game.
Braydi Johnson was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh but Hanley retired the next three batters to end the threat.
Kelly (2-10) did not allow an earned run or a walk in the contest as the freshman got the start in the circle for the Beacons.
Game Two: Bushnell 5, Carroll 1
Anabel Mendez (pictured) went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs in the second game. Silver (4-7) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits with no walks.
The Beacons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Mendez drove in
Suzi Krstic with a double to left center. Mendez singled in her next at-bat in the fourth and was brought home by a single from Yoshida to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Saints loaded the bases with three consecutive singles to open the fifth but the Beacons limited the damage to just one run on a sacrifice fly.
Bushnell added three runs in the bottom of the fifth, opening the frame with a double from
Krystal Akagi. Akagi scored on an error and Mendez drove in two more with a double to left, securing the 5-1 victory.
Hanley (7-11) took the loss for Carroll, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits.
Bushnell and Carroll close out the series with another doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m.
