Beacons Rally But Fall to Geoducks

OLYMPIA, Wash.  – The Bushnell men's soccer team came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie their Cascade Collegiate Conference clash with Evergreen on Saturday, but the Geoducks connected on a pair of late penalty kicks to claim a 5-3 victory.

The Beacons (3-9-1, 1-7 CCC), playing without the services of two regular defensive starters, managed to compensate with a strong offensive game, out-shooting Evergreen 29-21 and even had a pair of shots go off the cross bar within the first 20 minutes of the game. ESC (6-6, 5-4), however, collected 15 shots-on-goal.

Evergreen got on the board quickly, posting a score just six minutes into the game. They added another in the 29th minute and toward the end of the half went up 3-0. The Beacons never let the game get out of hand, however, and with less than two minutes to play in the opening frame, were rewarded with a penalty kick. Alejandro Munoz fired home the effort for his third goal of the season.

The Beacons slowly worked their way back into the game in the second half, tying the game on the back of a brace from none other than Caleb Burke, with both goals assisted by Miguel Nascimento (pictured). After tying Bushnell's single-season scoring record with his seventh goal on Friday, the sophomore broke the 12-year old record and then some, moving to nine.

Burke's equalizer came in the 71st minute and the battle looked destined for the Beacon's first conference draw. Evergreen, however, continued to apply pressure and forced not one but two penalty kicks over the final five minutes to seal the win.

After the game, Head Coach Joao Ehlers said, "We played well today and came back after being down by three goals, which is not easy to do. I am proud of the guys and the way they fought. Caleb has been working very hard and getting better every day. We are very pleased with his contributions to this team on and off the field."

Bushnell remains on the road next weekend, and will be traveling to Montana to take on Providence on Friday and Rocky Mountain on Saturday.
