Third-Set Rally Gives Beacons a Sweep

KIRKLAND, Wash.  – Nowhere near as dramatic as Friday's win over Evergreen, the Bushnell volleyball team took care of Northwest University on Saturday in three sets, 25-20, 25-19, 25-21.

The Beacons were able to go on 6-1 and 5-0 runs to open the first two sets and found smooth sailing through both as they established an early presence both on the block and at the service line.

The third set proved more challenging, however, and saw head coach Jason Corwin forced to take his final time out with the team trailing 17-12. Bushnell responded with seven straight points and went on to claim the third and final set as the Beacons rolled their winning streak to four straight.

"Ending the night on a comeback run was the perfect ending to a great weekend of volleyball," said Corwin. "Our offense woke up this weekend and the defense came along for the ride tonight. We shored up our blocking tonight and the back row racked up a ton of digs."

The Beacons (11-2, 7-2 CCC) finished the match hitting .263 with a 45-33 advantage in kills, 62-54 margin in digs and an 11-9 edge in blocks. Northwest (5-9, 4-5) hit .123 as both teams owned five service aces.

Bushnell once again flexed their offensive depth as they were led by Halle Neumann (pictured) who hit .474 with 11 kills and five blocks. Jessica Northcutt added eight kills while Friday's hero Shay Coons secured seven.

Neumann said, "Everyone maintained infectious energy tonight. Our serves and attacks were aggressive which kept our opponent on the defensive. The wins this weekend have put us in a great position for the second half of the season."

"I could not be more proud of our team maintaining and conquering another weekend," said Northcutt. "Everyone on the team is contributing in equal parts to our success."

Makenna Northern had another impressive night running the offense as she nearly averaged 13 assists per set, collecting 38 along with six kills. Callie Wilkins posted a team-high 13 digs and added three aces while Payton Jones led all players with six blocks. Matty Ladd added five blocks as well.

The Beacons will now return to the friendly confines of the Morse Center for a seven-match homestand, beginning next Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm against Walla Walla University.
