Beacon Men Win First CCC Championship

CALDWELL, Idaho – The Bushnell men's golf team moved from fourth-place to third-place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship event on Tuesday, and it was enough to keep the Beacons alone in first-place for the regular-season Championship, their first in school history.

Multnomah won the tournament, hosted by The College of Idaho at TimberStone Golf Course, by one stroke over Oregon Tech, 883-884. Bushnell finished in third with a score of 895, holding a 15-stroke clearance over fourth-place Lewis-Clark State. College of Idaho took fifth (912), followed by Corban (916) and Walla Walla (1001).

Determined by W/L Percentage in conference tournaments, Bushnell claimed the regular season championship by a half with a record of 19.5-4.5. The held on by their fingertips to hold off Multnomah, who took second-place at 19-5. Oregon Tech was close behind with a record of 18.5-5.5.

Men's golf becomes just the third Bushnell men's team to win a CCC regular season championship, joining the 2016 and 2017 men's basketball teams. Head Coach Larry Watts said, "After stumbling in the first round, the men regrouped and played the last two rounds like Champions of Character. They showed poise, patience and grit to climb back into third today, which they needed to secure the regular season championship."

Multnomah's Jacob Larson won medalist honors, shooting a four-under 212 over the three rounds. Day-one leader Carlos Davila from Lewis-Clark State followed at 216 and OIT's Preston Luckman took third place at 219. Zach Malina from Oregon Tech and Isaiah Lamont from Multnomah rounded out the top-five, at 220.

Bushnell Senior Jon Holzgang and freshman Jackson Muramoto tied for sixth place, shooting 221 to lead the Beacons.

Holzgang, who shot the second-best round on Tuesday with a 70, moved up from 15th to sixth, and more importantly was able to come back to claim Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Year honors. Holzgang was one shot back after Monday, but finished the year with a stroke average of 74.0 over the 12 rounds of CCC play. He defeated Davila from LCSC by four strokes.

"I am so proud to be part of this team and proud that we finished strong to win the season CCC Championship," said Holzgang. "It was great to finish on a high note by winning Player of the Year. It was exciting to see success and go out with a bang. We had such a great year of memories and obstacles and I will forever be thankful for this team and what we have accomplished."

Davila (74.3), Larson (74.6), Mayson Tibbs from Oregon Tech (74.7), Kasey Crossland from Corban (74.9), Tristan Belue from College of Idaho (75.1) and Chase Snodgrass from Multnomah (75.4) joined Holgang on the All-Conference team.

History was made for Bushnell as Holzgang becomes the fourth Beacon to ever win Player of the Year honors from the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Former member Concordia University had three players of the year while Corban University and Oregon Tech have had two apiece.

The Beacons contingent at the CCC championship also included Andrew Webb who took 12th (81-69-75—225), Caden Stubbs in 14th (78-78-72—228) and Cole Radbourne in 33rd (96-82-77—255).

"We learned a lot about who we and who we are becoming," said Coach Watts. "I am so proud of this teams work ethic and, more importantly, the bond this team shares. We have had a memorable spring season, starting with our victory over Multnomah at Bandon Dunes and ending with a conference championship. This was just a fun group of young men who are learning to become champs on and off the course."
