Beacon Men Shocked by Buzzer-Beater

SALEM, Ore. – Jordan Newt hit an off-balance 35-footer bank shot as time expired, lifting Corban University to an 86-85 victory over Bushnell University in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Friday night.

After a back-and-forth battle, the Beacons were holding a 13-point lead with 12 minutes to play after a pair of free throws from Stevie Schlabach. Corban rallied to outscore the visitors 27-13 over the final stretch. It was the Warriors first lead since the ten-minute mark of the first half.

Bushnell (2-3, 2-3 CCC) finished the game shooting 52% from the field and out-rebounded the Warriors 41-39. The Beacons turned the ball over 14 times while the Warriors coughed it up just six times and shot 13-for-25 from three-point range.

Newt finished the game with a team-high 19 points for the Warriors (7-2, 4-0), shooting 5-for-7 from outside. Mateo Eschiek scored 14 while Kendall Moore added 13 points and a team-high five assists. The Warriors out-scored Bushnell in bench points, 27-15.

Head Coach Eddie Alexander said, "I was proud of how we played our game tonight, but we did not value the basketball in stretches which allowed them to stay in striking distance. You could point to missed free-throws or a half-court heave that we defended really well, but at the end of the day we turned the ball over ten times in the second half and you can't do that against a solid team like Corban.

For the Beacons, reigning CCC Player of the Week Schlabach led all players with 25 points, adding a game-high nine rebounds. Ernest Ugoagu shot 6-for-10 and scored 19, adding a game-leading six assists. Kaden Sand also scored 20 with five assists.

"I am extremely proud of this group and how they continue to grind and push themselves," said Alexander. "We know where we are headed and games like tonight only make us better and more dangerous."

The teams will meet up again on Saturday night, tipping off at 7:30 pm for more CCC action.
