BANDON, Ore. – The Bushnell University men's golf team opened up their fall schedule on Sunday and Monday, competing against Multnomah University in Match Play at Bandon Dunes Golf Course.
Â
Director of Golf
Larry Watts said, "The weather and course were perfect this week. The team enjoyed the experience that Bandon and the southern coast provide. The team embraced the format and came together as a cohesive unit, fighting for every point."
Â
While not officially countable for collegiate scoring (only stroke play allowed), it was still a season highlight for the team as they defeated the Lions, 6 1/2 to 5 1/2. According to Director of Golf
Larry Watts, "This event was a great experience for our team and the golfers were even saying afterward that it may well be their best golfing and team experience while at Bushnell."
Â
Sunday began with four 4-ball matches, pitting two men from each team against each other in a best ball format. The Beacons took a 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 point lead.
Cole Radbourne and
Jackson Muramoto won their match 4 and 2 while
Andrew Webb and
Jon Holzgang were victorious, 2 and 1.
Â
Caden Stubbs (pictured) and Conner Maloney lost in their match, 2 up, while
Alvaro Molina and
Ethan Pentony halved to give Bushnell the edge.
Â
The format switched to eight individual matches on Monday, which the teams tied, 4-4. Bushnell wins came for Pentony (4 and 3), Molina (4 and 3), and
Cole Radbourne (3 and 2), making Radbourne the lone Beacon to win both his four-ball and singles matches.
Â
With three other Beacon losses, it came down to
Caden Stubbs and
Andrew Webb who were each playing against Multnomah's top-two golfers. Both men were able to come out with halves. "Those were tough matches and could have easily gone both ways," said Watts. "That is why match play is so much fun. Just one made or missed putt can swing the outcome.
Â
According to Watts, the teams are already discussing plans for a return engagement in 2022. He said, "Next year our goal is to grow to four teams in a bracket format and we hope to eventually move to a three-day, eight-team event."
Â
For now, the Beacons will concentrate on their return to regular season action. The team is set to play at Eagle Point next Monday and Tuesday in the Oregon Tech Spring Invitational, officially launching the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule.
