EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell softball team gave the University of Providence their first two wins of the season on Friday as the Argos swept a double-header from the Beacons, 7-4 and 9-5.
Â
Head Coach
Katie Duroe said, "It was frustrating today to beat ourselves. We had too many base running errors and gave up six unearned runs in what should have been a 1-2-3 inning in the opener. We need to make some better adjustments to turn things around."
Â
GAME ONE: Providence 7, Bushnell 4
Â
Both teams put up ten hits in the game with the difference coming in the top of the fourth inning. Trailing 2-1 after the Beacons scored two on an RBI double by
Noel Balderston, Providence took advantage of four Beacon errors, all coming with two outs, to post six runs.
Â
The Beacons added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but that would be all they would bring across the plate in the defeat.
Â
Miranda Jensen (2-7) went the distance for the Beacons with what Duroe called her best outing of the season, allowing just one earned run while striking out three batters. The senior also went 3-for-4 at the plate, grabbing a run and an RBI. Balderston also hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Â
McKenna Montgomery (1-1) got the victory in UP's first victory of the year, allowing four earned runs over six plus innings. KJ Schweikert faced the final two batters to earn the save.
Â
Offensively, Taylor Matthews went 3-for-4 to lead Providence. Ashlee Anderson had two doubles and scored twice while Peyton Elliot posted her first home run of the season.
Â
GAME TWO: Providence 9, Bushnell 5
Â
This time, the Beacons out-hit the Argos, 10-9, but could not take advantage in the loss. Single runs in the first and second innings gave Bushnell a 2-0 lead but once again a big inning proved costly. Providence posted five runs in the third with most of the damage coming on a three-RBI double from Elliot.
Â
The big bat for the Beacons belonged to
Anna Cardwell (pictured) in game two as the senior went 4-for-4 with three RBI. It was the first four-hit game of her career. Balderston went 2-for-4 and
Sam Silver went 2-for-3.
Â
Schweikert (1-1) claimed the victory for Providence, striking out two batters and allowing four earned runs.
Sam Silver (0-5) took the loss for the Beacons, allowing six earned runs in a seven-inning effort.
Â
Â
The teams will return to action for another double-header on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am.
