SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – It was a banner day for senior
Miranda Jensen, picking up two victories in the circle and tying the Bushnell single-game hits record as the Beacons took two from Providence for their first sweep of the season, 9-4 and 12-7
Â
Head Coach
Katie Duroe said, "I was really proud of the girls today. Both our wins were a full team effort. We have bene telling them all season it doesn't matter what our lineup looks like, they all have the ability to be successful and we showed that today. Both games had completely different lineups and both lineup earned wins."
Â
GAME ONE: Bushnell 9, Providence 4
Â
After the Argos scored in the top of the first, Bushnell answered in the bottom when
Noel Balderston stole home. That set the tone for the Beacons who quickly erased the ghosts of Friday's double-header sweep by UP and brought home their first Cascade Conference win of the season.
Â
The Beacons led 4-1 heading into the sixth but Providence came back to tie the game, fueled by back-to-back triples to dead center by Taylor Mathews and Peyton Elliot.
Â
Bushnell put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, iced by a two-RBI single for Akagi.
Â
Jensen threw a complete game, allowing three earned runs on six hits. McKenna Montgomery came in for the sixth inning and took the loss, allowing one earned run and three hits.
Â
Jensen also hit 2-for-4 in the game while Akagi batted 3-for-4 with four RBI. Mathews and Elliott each had two hits for the Argos
Â
GAME TWO: Bushnell 12, Providence 7
Â
The non-conference tilt started out well for the Beacons with 11 batters coming to the plate in a six-run first inning. Jensen capped the inning with a two-RBI single, the first of her record-tying five hits in the game.
Â
Bushnell scattered seven runs on seven hits between three pitchers, but the lead was never in doubt as they added five runs in the third. Tia Dumlao hit a three-run triple, and Jensen followed on the next pitch with a home run to right field, the first Bushnell home run ever at Rich Schwab Field.
Â
Lesley Reynaga got the start for the Beacons but didn't meet the inning requirement to record the win.
Sam Silver followed, allowing two earned runs in 2.2 innings and Jensen (4-7) closed out the final 2.1 innings with three strikeouts and one earned in consequential earned run in the seventh inning.
Â
Jensen is the second player to collect five hits in a game, joining Laynee Bevans, who did it in 2013. "Miranda had a great day on the mound for us and she was lights out on offense," said Duroe. "She is so hard to defend because she has the ability to lay down a bunt single or hit a home run, both of which she did today."
Â
Lilly Bauer went 1-for-1 at the plate, but walked three times and scored three runs.
Alexa Berry was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs and
Suzi Krstic batted 1-for-1 with a double and two runs.
Â
Bushnell will be back in action next weekend, traveling to take on Eastern Oregon University on Friday and Saturday.
