ASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon converted a penalty kick after a costly Bushnell red card in the 58th minute, putting the Raiders ahead for good in a 2-0 Beacon loss.
Julian Hernandez was having his usual fantastic day between the pipes, making eight dazzling saves. The senior, however, was sent off after SOU's Sam Walker picked off a clearance pass intended for the keeper. Hernandez was all of a sudden out of position and got caught using his body to prevent the easy goal.
Freshman keeper
Zach Cisneros was called to duty, and his first ever collegiate play was the penalty kick, which Alan Gaytan converted for the game-winner. The Raiders went on to tack on another goal in the final minute.
SOU (1-0, 1-0 CCC) out-shot the Beacons (0-6, 0-3) 29-4 in the game and Raider goalie Liam Kilhagen need to make just one save to pick up the victory.
"The stats don't quite show how we played today," said Carrazco, "but hats off to Southern Oregon for getting the job done. Julian is having a phenomenal year for us so far. He is arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the conference and over the last few weekends has shown the ability to not only keep us in a game but make the routine and spectacular saves.
"We won't have him tomorrow because of the red card, but it is just one of those things that is unavoidable. He did everything he could to stop the guy from scoring. I am proud of Zach for coming off the bench and getting his first minutes. He responded well and he is only going to get better in his career like Julian has."
The teams will be back in action on Monday at 3:30 pm, giving Cisneros his first collegiate start in goal.
