Huge Comeback Fuels Sweeping Victory

NEWBERG, Ore.  – Sometimes a sweep is just a sweep. Sometimes it means mounting one of the biggest single-set comebacks in program history to finish off your opponent. Bushnell did just that on Friday evening in taking a 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 win over George Fox University in non-conference action.

The Beacons (6-2) finished the night hitting .185 despite 11 blocks from George Fox (0-1) as the visitors held advantages for kills, aces, and digs.

Head Coach Jason Corwin said, "This was a good win against a team that made a lot of spectacular defensive plays. They got some confidence racking up a huge lead in the third set but we showed some real resiliency and grit to make that comeback and take the set and the match."

After a 2-1 Bruin lead in the first set, the Beacons fired off four straight points to take the lead for the remainder of the opening stanza.

Set two was all Beacons, as they rattled off 13 straight points with Makenna Northern in serve, claiming a 15-2 lead. GFU never got within eight the rest of the way.

Everything that went right in the second set started to go wrong for Bushnell in the third as the Bruins scored nine straight points to open the set. Fox held a 22-15 lead and was looking well on their way to forcing a fourth set when the Beacon torch was lit. Five straight attack errors began a 10-1 run that sealed the match, capped off by a kill from Claire Salness.

The Beacons were led to victory by sophomore Halle Neumann who was nearly untouchable on the outside, hitting .500 with nine kills and two blocks. I am proud of our team for the unity and perseverance we showed through the last set," said Neumann. "We are so grateful to be finally playing the sport with love and doing so against great competition."

Salness also had nine kills for the Beacons, adding 13 digs while Payton Jones and Natalie Martin added six kills apiece in the middle. Northern ended the night with a match-leading 33 assists and three aces while Callie Wilkins produced 20 digs to lead all players.

George Fox was led by Paige O'Rear with a match-high 11 kills while Liv Alexander and Ashtyn Butler produced six blocks apiece. Laney Search added 26 assists while Sophia Lawrence scored 17 digs.

Bushnell will be back in action next weekend as they resume Cascade Collegiate Conference action in the Caldwell pod. They face off with The College of Idaho (2-2) for a pair on Friday and then take on No. 9 Eastern Oregon University (4-0) on Saturday.
