EUGENE, Ore. – It was a monumental week for the Bushnell volleyball team and they were aptly rewarded on Monday, sweeping the Cascade Conference WVT Laboratory Volleyball Player of the Week awards.
Bushnell went 3-0 on the week, including a three-set win over No. 6 Corban University. It was the first loss of the season for the Warriors and gave the Beacons their first ever victory over an NAIA Top-Ten opponent. Leading the effort in that win, and a weekend sweep of Warner Pacific and Multnomah, were CCC Setter of the Week
Makenna Northern, Offensive Player of the Week
Shay Coons, and Defensive Player of the Week
Callie Wilkins.
Northern produced one of the strongest weekends of her career, averaging over 13 assists per set on the week. She collected 40 assists against Corban, and added 50 in a four-set victory over Warner Pacific, setting a new record for a four-set match. She recorded another 40 assists in the sweep of Multnomah on Saturday.
Northern now has three honors this season and ten CCC Player of the Week honors in her career, tying the Bushnell record held by former Track & Field National Champion Bailey Dell.
Coons led the offensive assault on the weekend, collecting 15 kills against both Corban and Multnomah. She averaged 3.8 kills per set on the week and hit a strong .330 clip.
Wilkins averaged 5.20 digs per set for the week, collecting 14 against Coban, 17 against Warner Pacific and 21 against Multnomah. She added six aces in the win over the Knights on Friday night.
After a seven-game home stand in which the team went 6-1, the Beacons hit the road this weekend, traveling to face Southern Oregon University on Friday and Oregon Tech on Saturday.
