Records Aplenty at Sudden Valley

BELLINGHAM, Wash.  – The Northwest Christian University women's golf team fired an all-time record 333 on Tuesday in the final round of the University of British Columbia Invite at Sudden Valley Golf Course. It was one of multiple person and school records that were collected on the day.

NCU finished the tournament in sixth place, fourth among CCC schools in the Conference counting event. They scored a two-round combined total of 687, the second-best tournament score in school history and the best in just over nine years.

The University of British Columbia won the tournament, followed by Oregon Tech, University of Fraser Valley, University of Victoria, and Corban.

One day after hitting a lifetime best, junior Kelsie Hellwege set a new NCU all-time record on Tuesday, firing a one-over par 73 in round two. Her mark breaks the previous record of 74, set by Ashley King on May 4, 2010.

Hellwege finished fifth and was fourth among CCC golfers as she hit a 148. She crushed the NCU record for a two-round tournament (previously 154) that was set by King on October 11, 2010. Hellwege was just one shot behind Oregon Tech's Ashley Zhu in third-place and two back from Cecile Kwon of UBC in second. Thunderbird Kate Johnston ran away with the individual crown, shooting a 4-under 140 for the event.

The NCU veteran wasn't the only player to post record scores on Tuesday. Sophomores Fernanda Gardea and Stella Reaka (pictured) each recorded rounds of 88, contributing to the low team score and establishing career lows. Gardea dropped three strokes off her previous best mark while Reaka was five shots better than hers.

All five Beacon golfers posted improved marks round-over-round. Cassidy Krauss was two shots better than her Monday round, shooting an 84. Her 170 combined score was good for 27th-place. Carli Brousseau had an even bigger improvement, hitting the clubhouse ten strokes lower than she had on Monday (91).

The 2019-2020 Cascade Conference season is halfway in the books, but the fall portion of the schedule is just heating up. This weekend the Beacons will head to McMinnville to compete in the Linfield Invitational.
