VALLEJO, Calif. – It wasn't their highest scoring game. It wasn't their largest margin of victory. The Beacons have collected more shots, shots-on-goal, and corner kicks. But it was a record-breaking day nonetheless for the NCU women's soccer team who held an opponent without a shot attempt for the first time ever, defeating Cal Maritime 9-0 on Friday afternoon.
Â
Three times previously the Beacons had held an opponent to one shot, but never had a spotless 90 minutes in the team's 13-year history. Today's result included a 43-0 shot count, 27 NCU shots-on-goal, and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Beacons were called offsides 11 times and the Keelhaulers collected a massive 19 saves.
Â
NCU's first victory of the season was clinched in 60 seconds when
Lauren Kogutkiewicz scored off a pass from senior
Sierra Graton. Kogutkiewicz completed the brace just three and a half minutes later, taking a feed from
Kara Mathison to go ahead 2-0.
Â
On the heels of her first career goal just three days earlier, Graton added her second in the tenth minute, gathering a loose ball at the 18-yard line and dribbling around three defenders before striking the nylon.
Jamie Figueredo tacked on a goal in the 28th minute off a feed from
Yazmin Gonzalez and
Aracely Marks found the back of the net in the 32nd minute off a give-and-go pass from
Jestyna Mosttler. NCU took a 5-0 lead into halftime.
Â
In the 67th minute
Cherish Clemmons earned her first goal as a Beacon, firing a rocket from 35-yards. Maritime fell victim to an Own Goal in the 69th as a defender misplayed a shot attempt from Trina Beecher and tapped the ball in.
Â
Graton added her second of the day just two minutes later, again weaving past multiple defenders to give herself a wide-open look. Amanda Wetten closed out the scoring in the 84th minute.
Â
The nine goals tied for the second-highest total in school history and were the most since another 9-0 victory on September 10, 2010 against Mills College.
Â
The Beacons will close out their quick jaunt to Northern California on Saturday, taking on Academy of Art University in San Francisco at 4:00 pm.Â
