EUGENE, Ore. – The Beacons hit the road over the weekend as they opened up Cascade Collegiate Conference action against The College of Idaho. C of I came out of it with a four-game sweeping including all three CCC-counting contests.
Jordan Kuykendall and
Jessica Garner led NCU on offense, collecting four hits apiece while
Shay Shropshire and
Emma Jegtvig combined for 17 strikeouts in 22 innings of work in the pitching circle.
GAME ONE: College of Idaho 7, Northwest Christian 1
After NCU went ahead with a run in the first inning, The Yotes responded with a four-run second inning to put things away. The Beacons managed just two hits in the game on C of I starter Colette Robert. Jegtvig allowed four earned runs and struck out four batters in a complete game effort.
GAME TWO: College of Idaho 6, Northwest Christian 4
The Yotes put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first inning and the Beacons were playing catch-up the rest of the way.
Noel Balderston,
Alexis Westbrooks (pictured), and Kuykendall had two hits apiece for the Beacons with Westbrooks punching a double and scoring two runs.
GAME THREE: College of Idaho 4, Northwest Christian 1
The Yotes completed the conference series with another win, breaking a 1-1 tie with a run in the fourth inning before adding a pair of insurance scores in the fifth. Garner's RBI double in the second inning brought Kuykendall around to score for the Beacons only run of the game. Jegtvig (2-4) recorded five strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work while Robert struck out eight NCU batters in a complete game.
GAME FOUR: College of Idaho 4, Northwest Christian 2
The non-conference tilt also went C of I's way as they scored three runs in the first inning on starter Shropshire to create too large a lead. Shropshire finished the game with a season-high six strikeouts. Garner and Westbrooks owned the RBI for the Beacons, both coming in the second inning.
The Beacons will be back in action on Wednesday, playing a non-conference double-header at Western Oregon.
