SALEM, Ore. -Â The No. 25 ranked Northwest Christian University men's basketball team completed the season sweep of Corban on Saturday night, stopping the Warriors in overtime 75-73 to claim a tie for third-place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The win improves NCU's improbable record to 13-4 away from the Morse Event Center.
Â
The Beacons finished tied for third with Corban and with the season sweep in hand, NCU claims the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament. Northwest Christian will play host to No. 6 seed Southern Oregon University on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
Â
The win was anything but easy for the Beacons (19-9, 11-7 CCC) as they battled through eight lead changes and seven ties. NCU led early with consecutive three-pointers from
Austin Tyner,
Riley Anderson and
Tyrus Hosley (pictured) pushed the advantage to 9-2 just three minutes into the contest.
Â
Holding a 23-17 advantage with seven minutes remaining in the half, the Beacons let Corban back in the door as the Warriors closed on a 17-9 run to take a 34-32 lead into the second half.
Â
Corban built their own seven-point lead in the second half, and were ahead 59-54 at the 5:44 mark. From there, Tyner bookended an 8-0 Beacon run with a three-point play and a three-pointer to give the visitors the edge once again.
Â
With 48 seconds remaining, Corban took the lead back on a Dalton Patchen dunk and were ahead 67-65 after AJ Hodges went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. On NCU's next possession Hosley was fouled after picking up an offensive rebound and made both of his freebies to the game and send it to overtime when the Warriors missed a last-second jumper.
Â
Overtime saw the two combatants trading blows with five lead changes, the final of which came on an
Austin Tyner layup with 2:10 remaining. NCU went on to hit three of their final four free throws in the final 39 seconds to hold on for the two-point victory.
Â
On a night when they shot just 35% from the field, Northwest Christian survived despite going 8-for-33 from three-point range as they forced 19 Corban turnovers and held a rare rebounding edge, 46-44 as they pulled in 13 offensive boards.
Â
Tyner went 10-for-11 from the free throw line and scored 28 points including 16 during the final five minutes of regulation and overtime. He led the team with seven rebounds and had five steals.
Â
Just five days removed from breaking his nose in practice and wearing a protective mask, Hosley scored 17.
Shawn Carson scored eight points and Earnest Ugoagu picked up five points and five offensive rebounds.
Â
Corban shot 41% in the game and also hit eight three-pointers. Four players landed in double-digits, led by Hodges with 18. Patchen and Beau Roggenbach scored 11 apiece while Beau Tilleman scored ten. Joel Johnson, the NAIA leader for field goal percentage, was held to two points on 1-for-5 shooting.
Â
After being picked to finish eighth in the CCC preseason coaches' poll, the Beacons end the season in third and will return to conference tournament hosting duties for the first time in two years. Corban claims the fourth seed and will play host to No. 5 Eastern Oregon on Wednesday.
Â
The other quarterfinal matches will feature No. 1 seed and CCC champion Oregon Tech taking on No. 8 Northwest while No. 2 seed College of Idaho will face off against No. 7 Warner Pacific University.
