Atherton, Calif. – The Northwest Christian University women's basketball returned from Christmas break with a 77-73 upset victory against #22 ranked Menlo University on Sunday afternoon.
NCU Head Coach Chad Meadors stated, "Today was a good game to be in after some days off with us coming off of break. Credit to Menlo they are a very good team and they did a great job attacking the basket. We hope to continue this momentum tomorrow and finish on a high note before returning back to Oregon."
The Beacons went into halftime with a 46-38 lead after shooting 56% from the field and 41.5% from beyond the arc. Despite being outscored 31-35 in the second half, NCU was able to hold on for the road win. The victory marks the sixth consecutive win for the Beacons.
Junior Kayce Mock led the Beacons (8-2, 3-0 CCC) with a double-double scoring ten points and a game-high 14 rebounds along with four assists and four steals. Morgan McKinney tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Aspen Slifka scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting from the field. Off the Bench Sarah Reinecker scored 14 points and Dani Baker added 11 points, the two combined to shoot 10-16 from the field and 5-10 from beyond the arc in the victory.
Meadors said, "Kayce had an outstanding game all throughout with a double-double which will be one of many for us. Dani came out and knocked down some big shots to get us started in the first quarter which was fun to see and Morgan was steady, she is such a rock for us. The two freshman Aspen Slifka and Kaylen Kamelemela were big making plays for us down the stretch with their free throws to help extend the lead."
Kiara Brown and Anya Gamez led the Oaks (6-5, 2-0) scoring a game-high 18 points a piece. Jasmyne Huggins added 12 points and six rebounds. Menlo outrebounded the Beacons 42-41 with 17 offensive rebounds in the loss.
The Beacons will look to continue their momentum on the road as they take on Cal-Maritime on Monday, December 30, at 2pm in Vallejo, California.
