Beacons Fall to Rocky Mountain, 4-1

EUGENE, Ore. – Riding the strength of a three-goal first half, the Rocky Mountain College men's soccer team knocked off the Beacons on Friday afternoon, 4-1.

The Bears (11-4, 11-1 CCC), currently receiving votes in the NAIA national coaches poll, held a 19-9 shot advantage and took seven shots-on-goal in the contest. They struck early, with Jens Zimmerman connecting with a header off a corner kick from Nolan Sherwood in the 4th minute. Just six minutes later, Marco Kummerle posted what would become the game-winner as the visitors went up 2-0.

The Beacons posted their goal within the first 15 minutes of the contest as well, when Oswaldo Ramirez found a corner kick from Andrew Mitchell and headed in the ball to avoid the shutout.

Rocky Mountain went on to tack on a second Kummerle goal in the 43rd minute as the senior tied teammate Sherwood for the conference scoring lead. Kummerle also assisted on the final insurance goal, coming to Dominick Portnell in the 65th minute.

"We had a solid game but unfortunately we came up short," said Head Coach Will Hander. "I am proud of the boys for playing hard for 90 minutes."

The Beacons (2-11, 2-10 CCC) will close out their season on Sunday at 2:00 pm facing Walla Walla University. NCU will honor their six seniors before the contest. Rocky, meanwhile, heads to Salem for a regular-season championship battle against No. 19 Corban at 3:00 pm. The Warriors are 11-0-1 in conference action and hold a one-point advantage over the Bears. Corban needs a win or tie to claim the CCC championship while RMC must win the game for that honor.
