CRESWELL, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University men's golf team debuted strong this week, taking third-place in their own NCU Invite at the Emerald Valley Golf Club. Reigning CCC Player of the Year Josh Goins opened his season where he left off, claiming fourth-place overall and third among CCC competitors.

Goins shot a three-round total of 222 and owned one of just six sub-par rounds of the entire event with his first-round 71. Goins was eight shots behind event medalist Andrew Harrison from British Columbia (214) while U-Vic's Josh Miller was second with 218.

All four of Goins' teammates were freshman, part of the largest incoming recruiting class (14) in school history. Michael Carrillo finished 19th (233), Andrew Webb (pictured) was 23rd (235) and Jon Holzgang was 25th (236). Rounding out the team was Nathan Mallory in 32nd (240).

As a team the Beacons tied for third with non-conference competitor Northwest Nazarene, totaling 915 over the three-round event. First-year associate CCC member British Columbia took the team crown with an 899 while Oregon Tech followed at 906.

For the first time in school history the Beacons fielded a second complete "B" team, along with four other individual golfers. The "B" team took ninth-place and finished ahead of the top teams from College of Idaho, Walla Walla and Warner Pacific. Liam Bedford led the group in 29th place (238) and was followed by Garison Lyman (32nd, 240), Carter Tetherow (48th, 247), Keegan Spengler (53rd, 251) and Caden Stubbs (59th, 260).

Four other Beacons competed as individuals. Freshman Ethan Pentony was the top golfer in that group, tying for 26th place with a score of 237. Senior Levi Dean claimed 32nd (240), Senior Jack Singleton was 42nd (243) and Dylan Catalano finished 66th (279).

The Beacons will send a pair of teams to the College of Idaho Invitational next week in Caldwell, the second Cascade Collegiate Conference event of the season.
