BEND, Ore. – Junior
Josh Goins secured another piece of hardware for his mantel on Tuesday, coming back from seven-strokes behind to claim his first Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Year honor as NCU competed at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships at Pronghorn Golf Resort.
Â
The Player of the Year prize goes to the golfer who holds the low stroke average over the course of the entire Cascade Conference season. Goins led throughout the season and came into the week with the lead, but was in Jeopardy of missing out on the title after a tough two Monday rounds on the challenging Jack Nicklaus designed course. Â
Â
Sliding to fourth-place in the standings, Goins would need to overtake three players, including leader Chris Carew from the College of Idaho, who had a seven shot advantage. Tuesday proved to be Goins' day, as he shot the low round of the day with a 75. Carew, meanwhile, carded an 84, and Goins took the title.
Â
For his entire career, Goins has proven to be at his best when competing at the CCC Championship tournament, winning the event as a freshman and sophomore. While he didn't win the tournament medal this time, his third round on Tuesday was enough to finish second. Oregon Tech's Mayson Tibbs won the event at nine-over (77-71-77—225) while Goins ended the event five shots off the lead (78-77-75—230). OIT's Tyler Franke (233), Carew (234) and Warner Pacific's Dillon Battles (237) rounded out the top-five.
Â
The tournament championship went to Oregon Tech, who also claimed the regular-season championship, beating Corban University by 22 strokes, 930-952. Walla Walla was a surprise in third-place (981). The College of Idaho (986) took fourth followed by Warner Pacific (987), Northwest Christian (1000), and host Multnomah (1152).
Â
Goins was the only Beacon to land in the top ten. Behind him were
Levi Dean (248, 19th) while
Jack Singleton and
Paul Smoot tied for 25th (261).
Â
Goins led the seven-member All-Conference team, earning his third All-CCC award. Also earning All-CCC accolades were  Carew, Tibbs, Franke, OIT's Houston Knox, along with Devery Stewart and Blake Netter from Corban.
Â
The season concludes for the Beacons, although Goins does have an outside chance at an at-large individual bid to the NAIA National Championship, which will be announced next week.Â
