Jegtvig Leads Beacons to Split

EUGENE, Ore.   – Freshman Emma Jegtvig led the Beacons as a hitter and pitcher on Tuesday as the Beacons ended a 13-game losing streak with a split against Carroll College.

Jegtvig threw six innings of relief and had the game-winning RBI single as NCU won in nine innings in the night cap, 4-3. Carroll had taken the opener, 1-0.

The NCU pitching combined to allow just nine hits on the day and didn't give up a single earned run

Game One: Carroll 1, Northwest Christian 0

The Fighting Saints completed a three-game conference sweep of the Beacons as Brooke Brown (3-3) tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout.

Carroll scored the only run of the game in the second inning when Brittany Smith came around to score from second on a misplayed ball in the outfield.

Jessica Garner picked up Beacons only hit in the game and earned a stolen bases as well, her 15th of the season. Sabrina Guerra allowed just the unearned run on three hits while striking out four batters in four innings of work. She was replaced by Alyssa Gayle who allowed just one hit over the final three innings.

Game Two: Northwest Christian 4, Carroll 3 (9 innings)

It was the Beacons who struck first in game two, posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Garner came around to score on a double by Gayle who followed her home on a single by Jegtvig.

Carroll would add single runs in the second and third innings and the game remained tied at 2-2 after seven innings. The Fighting Saints looked to be in position to complete the sweep in the top of the eighth inning. Brooke Brewer reached bases on a two-out error and came around to score on double from Brooke Yarnell.

The Beacons tied it up once again, however, scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from Tra Kucera.

Then, in the bottom of the ninth inning, NCU finally put away their first win since March 2nd. Caitlyn Messman and Garner opened the frame with back-to-back singles and moved to second and third respectively on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Kyla Wagner. Gayle, the CCC's leading home run hitter, was intentionally walked, loading the bases for Jegtvig who promptly sent a looping hit into center field for the victory.

Jegtvig finished the game batting 3-for-5 as the Beacons collected 14 total hits. She also struck out four batters in six innings of work out of the bullpen to improve her record to 2-7.

The Beacons hit the road this weekend for another four-game CCC set, this time heading to Klamath Falls to take on No. 24 Oregon Tech. The teams will clash beginning at 2 pm on Friday and again on Saturday at 11:00 am.
