Simpson Takes Two in Non-Conference Clash

EUGENE, Ore.   – The Northwest Christian University softball team was swept on Tuesday in a non-conference double header against Simpson University.

The Red Hawks (13-13), currently receiving votes in the NAIA national coaches' poll, combined for 22 hits on the day.

Ten different players collected hits for the Beacons (4-20) who also collected eight strikeouts in the circle.

Game One: Simpson 8, Northwest Christian 7

Simpson never trailed in the contest but the Beacons made it interesting. The Red Hawks led 4-3 as the teams headed into the seventh inning and seemed to have put the game away as Mia Olvera crushed a grand slam to left field to give the visitors a five-run lead.

The Beacons responded in the bottom frame with four runs of their own in an attempt to mount the comeback.

Emma Jegtvig (pictured) had a solid game for the Beacons, batting 2-for-4 with three RBI while throwing the final three innings in the circle without allowing an earned run. Alyssa Gayle also had two hits in the loss.

Game Two: Simpson 11, Northwest Christian 0

The Beacons were shut out on four hits in the second game as they got singles from Kelsey Hansen, Jessica Garner, and Anna Cardwell, along with a double by Maya Jenkins.

The Red Hawks collected 12 hits, scoring multiple runs in four different innings. Mazzie Davies and Olvera posted three hits apiece in the win while Sydney Moorhead (7-3) threw the complete-game shutout.

The Beacons are scheduled to be back in action on Friday and Saturday for a home double-header with Cascade Conference foe Carroll College. With dicey weather in the forecast, these games very likely could move into spring break. Check back with GoBEACONS.com for up-to-date information on the game.
