Beacons Suffer Three-Game Sweep

SALEM, Ore.   – The Beacons traveled to Salem this week for a three-game set with conference-leading Corban University but were unable to come away with the victory.

The Warriors (15-4, 7-0 CCC) shut the Beacons out in each of the first two games including a no-hitter on Thursday. NCU finally got on the board in the third game, but were defeated in a close game.

Jess Garner provided plenty of highlights on Friday, hitting 5-for-7. She also picked up a stolen bases in game one, her 44th career stolen base to set a new NCU career record. The junior now has 13 stolen bases on the season and needs just three more to tie her own NCU season record.

Game One: Corban 6, Northwest Christian 0

Corban pitcher Sabrina Boyd (7-1) was just two outs away from a perfect game when her own error ended the opportunity. She was still able to complete the no-hitter, however, collecting seven strikeouts. The Warriors collected nine hits and NCU pitcher Emma Jegtvig allowed just three earned runs while striking out six batters.

Game Two: Corban 8, Northwest Christian 0 (6 innings)

NCU opened Friday's double-header with four hits including three from Garner who went 3-for-3 with the record-breaking stolen base thrown in for good measure. Alyssa Gayle (2-5) took the loss in relief, allowing five earned runs over four innings while striking out two.

Game Three: Corban 8, Northwest Christian 6

The bats finally came alive for the Beacons in the final game as NCU matched the Warriors hit-for-hit. Northwest Christian took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off RBI singles from Avery Daniels and Garner. The Warriors took the lead with three in the bottom of the first inning and built the lead to five before the Beacons posted two during a late seventh-inning rally attempt.

Jegtvig (1-6) took the loss, allowing six earned runs and striking out three. Garner and Daniels finished with two hits apiece with both Corban and NCU earning 11 hits.

The Beacons will return home next Tuesday for a non-conference double-header with Simpson University, beginning at 11:00 am. The defending Cal-Pac champions are currently 11-11 and receiving votes in the NAIA national coaches poll.
