EUGENE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University put the brakes on a five-game NCU winning streak on Saturday evening, knocking off the Beacons 84-75 to hand the home team their first conference loss of the season.
Â
Two of the top three scorers in the Cascade Collegiate Conference faced off for the first time this season with EOU sophomore Jordan May and Beacon senior
Austin Tyner going head to head. The pair did not disappoint, combining for 59 points on 13 three-pointers.
Â
May did more damage and every time the Beacons began to make a move toward closing the deficit, it seemed to be May hitting another big three. The sophomore finished with 33 points, shooting 9-for-16 from three-point range. Landon Jones added 12 points while Zane Wright and Jarek Schetzle came off the bench to score ten points each. Schetzle added a game-high 11 rebounds as the Mounties out-boarded the Beacons, 41-33. Peter Hamilton played just 16 minutes for EOU, but lit up the stat sheet with six points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks.
Â
Eastern Oregon (7-7, 2-1 CCC) shot 52% in the game and went 13-for-26 from deep to survive a game in which they had 17 turnovers. They had led by as many as 19 early in the second half and never allowed the Beacons to get closer than nine the rest of the way.
Â
The Beacons (9-3, 1-1 CCC) were led by Tyner's 26 points. The senior hit four triples and led all players with four steals. NCU collected 12 steals as a whole.
Reece Robinson chipped in 17 points and nine rebounds while
Tyrus Hosley finished with 13 points in the losing cause.
Davonte Cleveland (pictured) came off the bench and led the team with nine assists. NCU shot 42% in the game and were just 8-for-18 from the free-throw line.
Â
Eastern Oregon will be back in action at 6:00 pm on Sunday, traveling north to Salem to take on Corban University. The Beacons stay home for a 4:00 pm game, welcoming No. 1 ranked College of Idaho into the Morse Event Center. Since joining the NAIA in 2006, NCU has faced a top-ranked team just three times.
