Beacon Men Avoid Crosstown Crisis

11/6/2018 10:25:00 PM

Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – Reece Robinson made a huge block on a late layup attempt, helping the Beacons escape with an 80-78 victory against cross-town foe New Hope Christian College on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Rexius Event Center.

The Beacons (3-2), who are now 8-0 against the Deacons in the NAIA era and had never won a game in the series by less than 19 points, were facing the possible end to the streak and a big upset loss as they allowed NHCC to shoot 51% in the second half, hitting nine three-pointers.

After watching nearly all of a 12-point halftime lead dwindle away, the Beacons were in prime position to escape as they brought the ball in off a time out with 19 seconds to go and a two-point lead. New Hope, however, forced a turnover and came down the court for not one but two last second attempts. The second was swatted away by Robinson to save the victory.

NCU was led by Austin Tyner, scoring 24 points as he shot 10-for-17 from the field. Davonte Cleveland added 18 points while Robinson finished with 12 and a game-high six rebounds. Zach Sly came off the bench to score ten points.

New Hope Christian had five players in double-figures, led by 17 from Jebari Robinson and 16 from Knigel Key. Fernando Barron added 14, shooting 4-for-7 from three-point range.

The Beacons will resume play on Friday night as they travel to Idaho for an exhibition game against Northwest Nazarene University.
