Rains Reigns as Rains Stay at Bay

SPRINGFIELD, Ore.  – The weatherman may have predicted a wet senior night for the NCU women's soccer team, but the final game of the season stayed dry as the Beacons shutout Multnomah University, 3-0. Senior Gianna Rains capped off her career with the game-winning goal.

It was the third career goal for Rains, who put an endcap on a career that began with a game-winner on her first goal four years ago. This time she found a corner kick from Taylor Binkerd at the 7:04 mark and fired a strike into the middle of the net from ten-yards out. For Binkerd, it was her second straight game with a corner-kick assist.

NCU went on to add two insurance goals in the second half. In the 49th minute, junior Lauren Kogutkiewicz posted her first career goal off a pass from Hannah Best. Best had the ball on a breakaway, drawing out the Multnomah keeper. Best made a move to beat the keeper and fired towards the pipes where Kogutkiewicz made a sliding kick to finish the job.

Then, in the 55th minute, Jamie Figueredo posted the first goal of her career as she took a rebound off a saved shot by Libby Gregory and tapped in another empty-net goal.

NCU finished the night holding a 15-8 advantage in shot attempts while holding the Lions to only a pair of first-half shots-on-goal. Katie Hastings made two saves in route to her third shutout of the season and sixth clean sheet of her career which ties her for second-place on NCU's career list.

The Beacons close out the year with a 4-11-1 record, quadrupling their win total from last season. They were 3-8-1 in the CCC. After the game, which was the final game for seniors Gregory, Rains and Britnee Joaquin, Head Coach Jessica Cardwell said, "We have had a tough year but this was a great way to end the season. I am so proud of our seniors who gave their very best throughout their career. They were our inspiration this weekend and they led with great passion and heart. Gianna, Britnee, Libby, and our manager Sami are going to be incredibly missed by our program."
