Beacons Make Quick Work of Eagles

EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University volleyball team rolled through their final game in the NHCC Tournament on Saturday morning, cruising to a 25-8, 25-11, 25-8 victory over West Coast Baptist College.

The Beacons (10-13) dominated all aspects of the match, hitting a school-record .618 as they posted 46 kills and just four attack errors. NCU out-dug the Eagles 30-17, posted 14 service aces and 41 assists.

Megan Van Marter added another chapter to her legacy, setting a new NCU three-set match record with 21 kills, after tying the previous record of 18 on Friday night. The senior blocker hit just one error and improved her CCC-leading attack percentage to .451, placing her No. 2 in the entire NAIA.

Outside of Van Marter, who also led the team with six digs, it wasn't the usual suspects who stepped up to the plate. Sophomore Carly Sand (pictured) led all players with 13 assists while Sophomore Mikayla Rodriguez led the way with two blocks. Both women played only the final set. Elle Vershingel, who had just one service ace on the season, added a career-high six on Saturday. In addition, Katie Allen and Mary Grace Blaser each posted five kills without an attack error.

West Coast Baptist was led by their setter Grace Tesdall, posting team-highs with 10 assists and five kills. The senior hit .455 as she went without an error on an effective dump set.

The Beacons return to action on Saturday night, heading back across the street to the Morse Event Center where they will host Walla Walla University at 8:00 pm in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
