Hot-Shooting Beacons Top Eagles, 92-80

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Austin Tyner scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Northwest Christian University men's basketball team to a 92-80 victory over the Northwest University Eagles in CCC action tonight.

Northwest Christian (9-10, 5-7 CCC) clocked one of their strongest shooting performances on the season in the win, going 52.3-percent on the night and 67.9-percent in the second half. The Beacons finished with a +7 turnover advantage, cashing in their extra possessions for 23 points.

The two-sides played a tightly contested first half, with three tie scores and ten lead changes in the opening twenty minutes. Neither team lead by more than five at any point during the period. Tyner broke the final tie of the half at the 1:43 mark with one of his four three-pointers, giving the Beacons a 35-32 lead. The teams traded scores again before the half ended with Northwest Christian holding a 37-34 advantage.

The even play continued in the beginning second half, which saw three more tie scores and a pair of lead changes. Northwest took their sole lead of the period, 46-44, on a Justice Martion tip-in at the 17th minute, which the Beacons quickly countered with a seven-point run. NCU slowly built up their lead over the next ten minutes and played out the final five minutes with a double-digit advantage.

Three Beacon starters finished in double-digits on the night, led by Michael Loomis who notched the games only double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Spencer Mattox finished with 13 points and six boards, while fellow guard Davonte Cleveland chipped-in 12 points on a 6-8 shooting effort. Tyrus Hosley provided some additional spark of the bench for the Beacons with ten points, three assists and two steals.

NU (9-13, 3-9) also had three starters in double-figures, with Christia Hakilimali scoring a team-high 20 points while pulling-down nine rebounds. Tre Benton (18), Tanner Davis (16), Justice Martion (13), and Kaelan Hick (12) rounded-out the bunch.

The Beacons are back in conference action tomorrow night when they visit The Evergreen State College Geoducks. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
