OLYMPIA, Wash. – Just 20 seconds away from their win of the season, NCU had to settle for one point in the conference standings, playing to a 2-2 draw with The Evergreen State College on Saturday.
Â
The Beacons struck first, scoring just before the end of the first half. After
Blake Doran's (pictured) initial shot was saved by the Geoduck keeper, senior
Tony Alcala was there to clean up the rebound, following for the goal.
Â
The second half had plenty of fireworks, first with ESC tying up the contest in the 56th minute on an unassisted goal from Tino Pantaleon.
Â
The game remained knotted until the 80th minute when Olisa Obianozie scored off a cross from
Sanad Elghanai for his second goal of the weekend.
Â
With the win nearly in hand, the Beacons made an unfortunate foul in the box with just 30 seconds left, leading to a penalty kick for Evergreen. NCU sophomore keeper
Yayo Olvera did the improbable, making the save on the PK attempt, but the shot was called off as Olvera was ruled to have improperly come off the line.
Â
Evergreen got a second opportunity for the penalty strike and this time Collin Tate delivered.
Â
Two scoreless ten-minute overtime periods later and the Beacons (0-4-1, 0-1-1 CCC) still walked away with their first positive result of the season.
Â
Evergreen (1-2-2, 0-1-1) outshot the Beacons 17-9 and forced Olvera into making seven saves.
Â
NCU returns to action next weekend, traveling to Montana to take on Providence on Friday and Carroll on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.Â
