Beacons Overpowered by No. 6 Red Hawks

EUGENE, Ore – Simpson University flexed some muscle on Tuesday, showing why they are in the top-ten in the NAIA, sweeping a double-header from Northwest Christian University, 10-0 and 10-2 at James Park.

The Redhawks needed just five innings for the run-rule victory in the opener, out-hitting the Beacons 12-1. Madison Wright and Bailey Akins came up with two hits each for the visitors while Courtney Clevenger collected three RBI. Paris Hallums (5-4) earned the complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit while striking out seven.

NCU's lone hit came off the bat of junior Madi Novelli who found the gap for a third-inning double. Katie Walker (2-6) took the loss in the circle, allowing two earned runs in the first inning.

Game two proved to be much of the same as Simpson pounded out 18 hits including a pair of doubles and a solo home run in the seventh inning by Mia Olvera, her first of the season. Olvera, Kayla Bailey, and Jessica Dager each posted three hits in the win.

The Beacons had seven hits from seven different players and scored their runs in the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Tra Kucera and Avery Daniels.

Kacey Pokorny picked up the win for the Red Hawks, allowing three hits and no runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Hailee Nichols collected the save, throwing the final 2.1 innings and coming in with a three-run lead.

Alyssa Gayle (0-3) went the distance for NCU and took the loss, allowing five earned runs while striking out one.

The Beacons will be back in action on Friday in what will now be a CCC home series against Corban University. Originally scheduled for Salem, Corban's field conditions have been deemed unplayable and the series shifts to James Park. First-pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday.
