EUGENE, Ore – After taking two from the Northwest Christian University Beacons on Sunday, Eastern Oregon completed the four game sweep on Monday, winning 10-2 in five innings and 1-0.
Â
The Mounties improve to 8-7 on the season including a 4-2 mark in the CCC while NCU drops to 2-12 overall, 2-4 in conference.
Â
EOU had the offense rolling in the opener, scoring three in the first inning, four in the third and three in the fifth. The Mounties collected nine hits in the game including six that went for extra bases. Fresh off her CCC Player of the Week win on Monday morning, Cheyenne Barker continued her torrid pace, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, three runs and four RBI. Chelsea Spanier added two hits and Lauren Burchak also went deep.
Â
The Beacons scored their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth as they attempted to avoid falling victim to the run rule. A triple by Jess Garner and walk by
Paige Griffith were followed by RBI groundouts from
Caitlyn Messman and
Tra Kucera.
Â
Haylie Van Laethem (3-3) went the distance to get the win for EOU, striking out one batter and allowing four hits in five innings of work.
Alyssa Gayle (0-3) took the loss for the Beacons, allowing seven earned runs in 3.2 innings. Senior
Katie Walker (pictured) threw the final 1.2 innings for the Beacons and did not allow a hit.
Â
Game One was all about offense and game two played the other way with a pitching duel. The teams combined for just seven hits, all singles, and neither team committed an error in the contest. EOU's first batter of the game, Taylor Gerlach, scored the only run of the game.
Â
Alexis Spence (1-0) threw the complete-game shutout for the Mounties, striking out five batters and allowing just a pair of singles to
Avery Daniels and
Madi Jones. Walker (2-5) had another strong outing as well, striking out three batters in her complete game effort.
Â
NCU will be back on the field, weather permitting, on Tuesday afternoon when they welcome in No. 6 Simpson University for a non-conference NAIA double-header beginning at 12:00 pm. EOU is off until Friday when they return home to begin a four-game series with the University of Great Falls.Â
