Beacons Fire on All Cylinders in Win

ASHLAND, Ore. – Coming back after a tough Thursday loss at Oregon Tech, the CCC Champion Northwest Christian University couldn't have asked for a better outcome then they got on Saturday night, closing out the regular season with a 92-80 victory over Southern Oregon University.

The Beacons (24-4, 17-3 CCC) shot 58% from the field, out-rebounded the Raiders 37-26, and had 22 assists on 40 field goals in the victory. NCU also went deep on Saturday, getting 43 points from the bench contrasted with 21 points from the SOU reserves.

It was a starter, however, that led the way as senior Jay Mayernik made his final trek to the school where he got his collegiate career started 13 years ago. It was another signature moment for Mayernik, flirting with a triple-double as he scored 19 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists, along with two blocks.

Off the bench, sophomore Austin Tyner (pictured) was impressive shooting 7-for-8 from the field for 17 points. Brendyn Taylor chipped in with 14 points and junior Jordan Alexander was 5-for-7, scoring 11 points off the bench.

Southern Oregon (17-12, 11-8 CCC) was led by Tristen Holmes, scoring 24 points and nine rebounds. Ben DeSaulnier added 21 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field. SOU shot 49% from the field and were 19-for-23 from the free-throw line.

NCU, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA and owning the top seed for the CCC tournament will play host to the No. 8 seed on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. That foe will either be Corban University or Warner Pacific University, depending on the outcome of Corban's final game with Oregon Tech on Sunday afternoon. The Beacons swept both opponents during the regular season.

Southern Oregon will hold either the fifth or sixth seed for the CCC tournament, depending on how things shake out on Sunday.
