Mounties Move On to Semifinals

EUGENE, Ore. – The 2017 NCU volleyball season came to a close on Thursday night with a 3-0 loss to No. 13 Eastern Oregon University in the quarterfinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament, 25-14, 25-15, 25-20.

EOU (22-8) seemed to do everything right on Tuesday, hitting .284 while adding four service aces, a 59-46 advantage in digs and a 5-3 edge in blocks. The Beacons (16-10) hit just .089 and were never able to find much of a rhythm.

Eastern Oregon was led by Amanda Miller, hitting .556 with 11 kills and just one attacking error. Megan Bunn had a match-high with 13 kills and also hit .429 with one error. Madison Pilon produced a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs and Kiley McMurtrey led the Mounties with 14 digs.

The Beacons got one final offensive gem from freshman Kasey Campbell, hitting .389 with a team-leading nine kills. Maci Beierle put a final stamp on her shining season with 21 more assists, making her just the second player in school history to collect over 900 assists in a season (906).

Haley Damian added a match-high 15 digs to wrap up her season with 410, breaking her career high set last season. She ends her four-year run with 1315 to finish third all-time for the Beacons. Senior Keri Schwarz, who last weekend broke NCU's single-season record for blocks, added one more to finish the year with 88, one higher than teammate Megan Van Marter who posted two on Tuesday. Both ladies cleared the old record of 83, set by Cotie Howard in 2007. Van Marter also ended the year with a new single-season record for block assists with 81. The previous record was 63, owned by both Tami Brown and Janel Fetters since the 2012 season.

The match ends a memorable season for the Beacons that included the first playoff bid in four years along with school records for conference wins (11) and block assists (323). The Beacons finished the season 16-10 and were 11-9 in CCC play. Head Coach Kelly Pitre also improved her career record to 50-51. Her winning percentage of .495 is the best for any NCU volleyball coach in school history.
