EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University men's soccer team may have been facing the Pioneers on Sunday, but it was the Beacons who took on the role of settler, winning their second straight game to open the season. NCU defeated Pacific Union College on the road, 6-0.
Â
Not only was the offense firing on all cylinders, scoring three goals in each half, but the defense was as well, holding PUC to just two shot attempts and one shot-on-goal.
Â
It didn't take the visitors long to get on the board as
Angel Sandoval (pictured) scored in the 5th minute.
Raul Segoviano added a score in the 12th minute and then assisted on a second Sandoval goal in the 20th minute for the early three-goal advantage.
Head Coach
Benny Flores said, "The boys came out and played NCU soccer from the start of the whistle today. We were able to play everyone today and they all showed well."
Â
The Beacons found more of the same late in the second half as the team depth came into play. Pacific Union was using just one player off the bench while NCU was able to put 17 different reserves into the contest. All three second-half goals came from those players in the final 11 minutes of the game.
Â
Tony Alcala scored his first goal of the season in the 80th minute, taking a pass from
Tito Gomez. Freshman
Blake Doran added his premier collegiate score just 30 seconds later, and Alcala found the back of the net again in the 88th minute, off a feed from
Adrian Palacios.
"Tony scored two beautiful goals today," said Flores. "He has a knack for finding the net and I am excited to see how he develops."
Â
Yayo Olvera got the win between the pipes, needing to make just one save in 67 minutes of work. In total, the Beacons out-shot the Pioneers 28-2 and held a 16-1 advantage in shots-on goal.
Â
NCU returns to action on Monday against Simpson University, looking to make it three in a row when the game kicks off at 1 p.m.
