EAGLE POINT, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University men's golf team launched the spring portion of the schedule this weekend, taking sixth place at the Oregon Tech Spring Invite at Eagle Point Golf Club.
Â
Acting as a defacto CCC preview event for the conference championship in April, the Beacons finished fourth among Cascade Conference teams, claiming a four-shot advantage over The College of Idaho.
Â
"I am pleased with the enthusiasm I saw in this team this weekend," said Interim Head Coach
Tyler Falk. "This is a young team with a lot of promise. Altogether, I hope this performance will motivate the guys. The next couple weeks should be fun. We will see who wants to rise up by the work they put in."
Â
Freshman
Josh Goins (pictured) had an impressively steady tournament for the Beacons, taking 15th place individually behind a three round score of 231 (74-78-79). His first-round 74 matched a season best and he went on to record three birdies in his first five holes in round two.
Â
Falk said, "Josh has consistently shown me a level of maturity that he can be a foundation player for the future. I was pretty excited for him early on in round two and I thought he may make a run at individual medalist."
Â
Cody Gardner was second among the Beacons, taking 26th (81-82-81=244). He was followed closely by
Levi Dean in 30th (85-84-80=249). Rounding out the Beacon contingent were
Jack Singleton (251, 31st),
Paul Smoot (251, 31st) and
Austin Dame (253, 37th).
Â
As a team, NCU scored 972 points. Oregon Tech, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, won the event with a score of 884.
Â
The Beacons will return to action in two weeks, traveling to Portland for the next Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament, hosted by Warner Pacific at Glendoveer Golf Club.Â
