VIEW LIVESTATSEUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University men's basketball team will look to make more history on Tuesday night when they host the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship game against third-seed Warner Pacific University.
Â
The Beacons have never won a CCC tournament title and are making just their second appearance in the game. Two years ago, NCU advanced to the championship game where they lost to The College of Idaho in Caldwell. This year they face a team that is no stranger to big games. The Knights are 3-1 all-time in the title game, most recently earning the championship in 2013 over Southern Oregon University.
Â
The Knights went down to Ashland on Saturday night and defeated SOU for their fifth appearance in the title game, 97-80. Warner Pacific comes in as the hottest team in the conference, winning nine straight games, including a 78-72 victory over NCU on February 13. During the current streak, Warner Pacific is averaging 91.4 points per game and winning by an average of 17 ppg.
Â
The Beacons and Knights split the regular season series with each team winning at home. Tonight will be the 40th all-time meeting between the schools. WPC holds a 31-8 lead in the all-time series. In the post-season, the teams have met twice. The Beacons won a quarterfinal game in Portland in 2009 and the Knights followed that up with a quarterfinal win in 2010.Â
Â
NCU (26-6) has already claimed one of the CCC's two automatic bids to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national tournament as the regular season conference champion. Warner Pacific (23-8) is all but assured an at-large bid to the tournament as it stands, but will look to claim the other automatic bid by winning the tournament tonight. If the Beacons hold serve and win the tournament title, the second automatic bid will revert to Southern Oregon University at the No. 2 seed in the conference tourney.Â
