EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore
Ashlee Cole hit a pair of home runs on Friday as NCU won a rain-shortened game over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, 9-8. The second half of the scheduled double-header was cancelled due to the poor weather and field conditions.
Cole got things going for NCU in the first inning, hitting a three-run blast to left-center field, scoring
Anita Singh and
Paige Griffith.
Embry-Riddle answered and took back the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs. The Eagles added another run in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead.
The rain began to fall lightly during the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Beacons rallied back to tie the game at 5-5 on a two-run homer from
Parker Fritter. The senior now has 25 home runs in her career including 11 at James Park.
In the top of the fifth, with the rain coming down in earnest, Embry-Riddle scored another three runs to take a commanding lead.
The storm was in full downpour mode by the time the bottom of the fifth came along.
Jessica Garner opened the frame with a single, followed by a stolen base. Griffith followed with an RBI single, bringing Garner home to make it an 8-6 game.
Kyndle DelCollo also reached base, putting two runners on for Cole who completed her six-RBI game with another home run, to the exact same spot in the trees in left-center where she had hit the first one.
After a walk to Fritter, with NCU leading 9-8, the game was halted as the field began to become unplayable in the rain. After a 45-minute delay the decision was made by the umpires and both coaches to end the game.
The Beacons finished the game with seven hits and survived four errors in the field. Freshman Madison Jones picked up the win, the first of her career as she improved to 1-0 on the season.
Olivia Ramos took the loss for the Eagles (2-11), giving up six earned runs while striking out two. Embry-Riddle had eight hits in the game from eight different batters including a double from Kaila Romero and a triple by Rachel Pope. Makenzie Hospodka led the team with three runs scored.
The Beacons (3-8) will be back in action on Sunday, traveling to Redding, California for a double-header with Simpson University. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 am.
