CALDWELL, Idaho – It is well known that whenever you travel to face The College of Idaho, records can be thrown out the window. That truth was never more evident than Saturday night when the Yotes upset NCU 75-54 behind the strength of 1100 fans in the crowd. The loss broke a five-game winning streak for the Beacons.
Â
NCU was never able to get things going, trailing 25-12 at the end of the first quarter. C of I bolted out of the gate, getting three three-pointers in a 17-4 run over the first five minutes. NCU would score eight-straight, including triples from
Sami Pitts and
Jenna Christenson, to pull within 17-12, only to see the Yotes pick up the pressure. The run continued in the second quarter, as five quick Burnham points fueled a 17-4 run to open the frame, giving the hosts their largest lead of the night at 41-19.
Â
NCU would not go away as they began to make stops toward the end of the second quarter to hold the Yotes without a made field goal for a 10 minute stretch. The Beacons cut the deficit to 43-36 on a
Niki Duncan 3-pointer midway through the third quarter, but C of I put the game out of reach, scoring the first 11 points of the fourth to extend the lead.
Â
The Beacons (13-7, 9-3 CCC) shot just 29% from the field and hit just 6-for-28 from three-point range.
Monique Thompson (pictured) led the team in scoring with 15 points, adding three assists.
Jenna Christenson came off the bench to score nine and Duncan finished with eight in NCU's first conference loss since December 6. Senior
MeShel Rad had a rare 13-rebound, zero-point stat line, leading all players on the glass as she snagged eight offensive boards.
Andrea Gloss was also quiet offensively, but led all players with four blocks.
Â
The College of Idaho (5-14, 4-9) was led by Haylee Burnham's double-double, scoring a game-high 22 points along with ten rebounds and four assists. Petra Lumpert added 15 points and Ryleigh Swagerty scored 13 in the win.
Â
NCU returns to Eugene for a Tuesday clash with Corban University, which begins a busy week. The Beacons will also be on the road to face New Hope Christian College on Thursday before heading to take on Walla Walla University on Saturday night.Â
