Three-Point Record Smashed in Win over New Hope

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 19 ranked Northwest Christian University men's basketball team took care of business on Monday night, defeating cross-town foe New Hope Christian College 107-49. A number of records were broken in the process including a new gold standard for three-pointers as the Beacons shot 22-for-37 from outside.

Omar Richards (pictured) had a career-defining night, scoring 33 points as he shot 13-for-16 from the field. The senior was 6-for-7 from three-point range, producing the highest perimeter shooting percentage for NCU in over ten years.

The Beacons stormed out of the gates on both sides of the ball, outscoring the Deacons 48-14 in the first half. Richards had 20 before the break. NCU held NHCC to 20% shooting, including a 1-for-16 performance outside, and allowed the fewest points in a single-half in school history.

The defense took a back-seat in the second half as New Hope began to find their own three-point rhythm, finishing with ten triples.

NCU (14-4) won their seventh straight, finishing the night shooting 57% from the field and 59% from three-point range. Richards added a game-high 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Donta Harris scored 14 points and Jordan Alexander scored 12. Both athletes were 4-for-5 from outside. Jack Hackman added 11 points and Jay Mayernik came off the bench to score ten.

New Hope was led by Isiah Large with 16 points, shooting 5-for-8 from outside along with a game-high eight assists. Carlos McLeod added 13 points and Trey Harbick finished with nine.

Assistant Coach Mark McCann said, "I'm really proud of how hard our guys played. From the opening tip, they played hard on the defensive end. Any time a team can share that ball that well and shoot that well, you can build momentum that carries over to conferennce play.

The Beacons will return to action on Friday night, playing host to Warner Pacific College in what should be a top-25 match-up. The opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
