Beacons Sweep No. 10 Simpson

EUGENE, Ore. – Making their 2015 home debut, the NCU softball team did not allow an earned run on Sunday, claiming a double-header sweep from No. 10 Simpson University, 2-1 and 3-0. The Beacons improve to 3-11 on the season with all three wins coming against the Red Hawks.

GAME ONE

NCU won in dramatic fashion in the first game. After giving up an unearned tying run in the top of the seventh inning, Jillyn Suratt gave NCU the win in the bottom of the inning with a walk-off double, scoring Anita Singh. Suratt (1-2) also picked up the complete game victory in the circle, striking out a season-high six batters and giving up just five singles.

Suratt was 2-for-4 at the plate and Singh was 2-for-3, scoring both runs. Her first time crossing the plate came on a bases-loaded walk to Parker Bonife in the bottom of the fifth.

GAME TWO

Sophomore Katie Walker threw the first complete game shutout of her career, allowing just five Red Hawk singles in seven innings of work. The shutout was anything but easy as Simpson left six runners on base. Her biggest jam came in the top of the third inning when the Red Hawks loaded the bases with one out. Walker worked her way out stopping a comebacker to force a play at home for the second out before diving catch by Randi Koster ended the threat.

Offensively the late dramatics of game one were replaced by early production as NCU scored what would be the game-winner in the bottom of the first inning when Suratt came home on an RBI single by Bonife.

The final pair of runs came home in the third inning on a Bonife RBI double and a ground out from Taylor Medley that scored Ashlee Cole.

Bonife and freshman Katelin Downes were each 2-for-3 at the dish for the Beacons.

NCU returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Monmouth to take on Western Oregon University at 2 p.m.
