EUGENE, Ore. – Returning to the road after a successful home debut on Sunday, the Northwest Christian University softball team was swept by Western Oregon University on Tuesday, 2-0 and 10-4. The second game featured five NCU errors that led to six unearned runs.
GAME ONE Senior Jillyn Suratt continued her strong pitching in the opener, only to be outlasted by the Wolves starting pitcher as both hurlers tossed complete games. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when WOU stringed three hits together including back-to-back RBI singles for the 2-0 win.
Suratt (1-3) struck out two batters and scattered six singles but picked up the loss. She has not allowed an extra base hit since February 22, a span of over 16 innings.
Taylor Medley led the Beacons at the plate, batting 2-for-3,
Addy Hoskins picked up a single and
Ashlee Cole hit a double to account for all four of NCU's hits.
GAME TWO NCU jumped on top early in game two, scoring a pair in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI double from
Addy Hoskins. WOU scored one in the bottom of the first but the Beacon got that one back in the top of the second as
Chelsea Roberts crossed the plate after an errant throw attempting to put her out at second base.
Western Oregon went to work, scoring four runs in the second and three in the third to build a 8-3 lead. Single runs in the four and fifth made it 10-3. The Beacons managed to get one more run on the board in the seventh on an RBI single from
Kaeli Massetto (pictured), but that would be all.
Katie Walker (2-6) suffered the loss for NCU, allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits over the first two innings.
Janieve Boyles pitched the final four innings in relief, allowing four hits and three walks. Two runs came in on her watch, although both were unearned.
The Beacons remain on the road this weekend as they start conference place. On Friday they will be in La Grande to take on Eastern Oregon (9-6) and then they close out the trip in Caldwell, Idaho on Saturday against The College of Idaho (8-12).
